The Lookout Oct 20th

Booking Holdings is also putting $100 million into an AI travel agent, a court narrowed Clark County’s licensing freeze, and one host charges $500 for a late checkout.

What The Heck Is That?: Overlay District

An overlay district adds an extra layer of zoning rules on top of a neighborhood’s existing zoning. A property keeps the rules it already had, and the overlay adds more. Norfolk, VA, just passed one for its Willoughby neighborhood: new vacation rentals there can’t open within 300 feet of an existing one. A property with 4 documented violations in 2 years can’t operate as a short-term rental for 2 years, and existing rentals can renew through administrative permits.

To check whether an overlay covers an address, look it up on the city’s zoning map and its overlay map, then read the overlay’s page in the city code.

At that price, a guest picks a lane, and the opening lines of each description pick it first. Open yours with the lane you want guests to choose.
