LA28 Olympic Housing Crisis: Why Short-Term Rentals Are Los Angeles’ Only Solution

February 12, 2026

Los Angeles has a serious problem.

The LA28 Olympic Games are two and a half years away, and they’re expected to draw 15 million visitors from around the world.

But yesterday, a Deloitte report revealed that lodging demand will exceed available capacity on 13 out of 19 competition days.

320,000 visitors could be left scrambling for a place to stay on peak nights.

The Obvious Solution? Short-Term Rentals.

And we might be biased, so here's why:

✔️ No new construction needed.

Hotels could take years to build. But with STRs, the homes already exist.

✔️ Massive economic upside.

Increasing STR supply by just 40% could generate $257 million in economic activity, create 2,800 jobs, and $63 million in tax revenue.

✔️ Distributed tourism.

Hotels are usually in downtown or beach areas. With STRs, money flows to real neighborhoods and people, not just hotel corridors.

STRs aren't optional anymore.

They are critical infrastructure for tourism and events.

But here’s the blocker…

Los Angeles has some of the strictest STR regulations in the country.

Primary residence rules.

ADU bans.

120-night caps.

Thousands of potential listings are sitting on the sidelines.

But these rules are not set in stone.

When wildfires hit in 2025, the county temporarily relaxed these rules.

Will LA consider easing them for a once-in-a-generation economic opportunity?

Local business leaders are already speaking up, and the consensus is shifting.
