That's the share of travelers who say they'll pay more for a higher-quality vacation rental listing, according to Vrbo's new Built to Stay Report, released this week. Among Gen Z travelers specifically, that number jumps to 92%.

Who's Liable When a Rental Party Turns Violent?

A short-term rental on Indianapolis's near north side was the site of a party that drew roughly 300 people on July 25, ending in gunfire that left a 15-year-old girl hospitalized in stable condition. It's the second shooting at that same address in under a year, the property had a separate incident in December 2025 under a previous owner, with no injuries but 10 firearms recovered.

Current owner Jack Haniels told local reporters that vetting renters and verifying the party's legality was VRBO's responsibility, not his, then ended the interview when pressed on his own role. His short-term rental registration with the city had lapsed since he bought the building in April, Indianapolis requires a $150 annual registration for any Airbnb or Vrbo listing.

Keep your local registration current, and know your own party and guest-count policies before a booking becomes something you can't undo.

Riverside County, CA's STR Ordinance Just Went Back to the Board

Riverside County's revised short-term rental ordinance (927.3) was scheduled for a Board of Supervisors vote on July 28, following months of community meetings this summer. The ordinance would formally replace a temporary moratorium that's been in place in Thousand Palms and B Bar H Ranch since April 2025.

If it passes, it locks in real numbers already used elsewhere in the county: Occupancy caps based on acreage (10 guests max under half an acre, up to 20 on 2+ acres), a $740 initial application fee plus $540 annual renewal, and area-specific caps like Idyllwild's 500-certificate limit and Wine Country's district-by-district caps (as low as 8 certificates in some zones). A new Tier 2 application window opens August 19 through September 17, worth knowing if you're trying to get in before any cap fills up.

Guests Will Pay More for 3 Things, and Luxury Isn't One of Them

Vrbo's new global research, released this week, breaks down exactly what "quality" means to guests, and luxury amenities aren't it.

Cleanliness leads every list: 78% cite exceptional cleanliness as their strongest quality signal, with fresh sheets and towels specifically (74%), no unpleasant odors (67%), and spotless bathroom surfaces (66%) as the clearest markers. Reviews carry real weight too, 68% say verified reviews are very or extremely important, and 64% specifically want recent reviews, not old ones sitting on a listing from years back. Responsiveness matters more than a lot of hosts probably think: 56% of travelers expect a response within an hour if something goes wrong mid-stay.

Cost Segregation Can Save You $60,000 in Year One

This is one CPA firm's real estimate, for a $600,000 short-term rental combining a cost segregation study with 100% bonus depreciation. Your actual number depends heavily on your property's land value and location, mountain properties with lower land values (around 15%) tend to see higher savings, while beachfront properties, where land can make up 50% or more of the total value, see less.

Here's how it works: A cost segregation study identifies specific parts of your property, carpeting, appliances, landscaping, and reclassifies them into much shorter 5, 7, or 15-year depreciation schedules. Standard residential rentals depreciate over 27.5 years; true short-term rentals, where the average guest stay is 7 days or less, often depreciate over a 39-year commercial schedule instead. Either way, cost segregation lets you front-load a large chunk of that depreciation into year one.

This is a timing strategy, not free money. Some of that depreciation gets "recaptured" and taxed when you eventually sell. The real benefit is having that cash sooner and putting it to work now.

Host Camp's Cost Segregation Calculator gives you an instant estimate: bonus depreciation, net year-one savings, and the multi-year tax impact across the full 2- to 39-year schedule, calculated for your actual property in a couple minutes.

The AirDNA Report Every STR Host Should Read

Occupancy is forecast at 57.4% for 2026, above the pre-pandemic average, and the reason why matters more than the number itself. Higher mortgage rates delayed a wave of new investors who would've otherwise flooded the market, which means fewer new listings competing for the same guests. Existing operators are getting real pricing power right now. If you haven't tested a higher rate this month, this is the data that says you should, and the full report also breaks down a hard split in international demand and which markets are pulling ahead this year.

The Only Tech Stack You'll Ever Need for Direct Bookings

Setting up direct bookings sounds like it needs a stack of 6 different tools. It doesn't. 2 pieces cover everything you need, a PMS and a payment processor, but only if they're correctly configured to talk to each other. Host Camp vetted the real options, picked one for each, and walked through exactly how the booking and payment flow works behind the scenes, including the 1 free tool worth adding once bookings start coming in.

When Airbnb Won't Remove the Bad Review

You got a bad review. It was unfair, retaliatory, fake, whatever the category, it didn't belong there. You downloaded the Host Camp Dispute Kit, filed your case with the exact template, and Airbnb still said no.

Here's what to do next. A first dispute getting auto-declined happens often, it's not the end of the road. Call support and ask specifically to escalate to a supervisor, that's a real next step worth trying before you give up. If it's still denied after that, there's an escalation path a lot of hosts have never heard of: As of this year, the American Arbitration Association is Airbnb's official dispute provider for US users, with fee caps that keep a claim viable for a single host.

Our Vetted Properties, Math Complete

In case you missed it, we built a property Marketplace where every listing already shows its revenue potential and cash-on-cash return (CoC), calculated for you. A strong return is usually around 8 to 12%, but a few of the 7 deals live right now push well past that. The current list ranges from $200K to $2M, including a California beach house projecting 44% and a renovated Colorado triplex at 22%. We laid out all the numbers so you can just look at the actual math.
