Prefab Cabin Kits 2026: Compared on Price, Days and Crew

On what the makers publish, the Conestoga Mountain King puts the most in the box per dollar: $100,805 for 1,080 square feet, with the roof, windows, doors and insulation in the kit. DEN is the fastest to a closed shell at 5 to 15 days. The Backcountry Hut System 00 is the only kit here sized for 4 or 5 capable friends and a week.
The number a kit buyer needs is assembly days multiplied by crew size, because that is the labor bill the kit price leaves out. Every figure below comes from the maker's own page, checked on 4 October 2026. Where a maker does not publish a figure, the cell says so, and that cell becomes a question to ask before a deposit.
The comparison table
Backcountry Hut prices in Canadian dollars. The US figures are the maker's own conversion, $80,580 CAD for System 00 and $274,698 CAD for the Great Lakes layout, and the maker says prices can change and leave out permits and taxes. Backcountry Hut also states that its price excludes interiors, shipping, site preparation and assembly. DEN and Conestoga do not list exclusions on the pages we read, so ask each for that list in writing.
Crew days, the bill the kit price leaves out
Take the maker's days and multiply by the people on site.
- System 00. Under a week with 4 to 5 people is at most 35 crew days. The maker says no heavy machinery is required, which is why friends can stand in for a contractor.
- DEN. 5 to 15 days, assembled by your contractor. If that contractor sends 4 people, the shell is 20 to 60 crew days.
- System 01. 3 to 6 weeks with a team of builders. The maker does not publish a crew size, so the range cannot be worked out from the page.
- Mountain King. No published figure. Get it in the quote.
Then price it at the day rate you are quoted locally. As an example only, at $400 per person per day, 35 crew days is $14,000 and 60 crew days is $24,000. On a $58,065 kit that is a quarter of the kit price again, before a foundation exists.
Avrame, the A-frame priced by kit level
Avrame sells its A-frames in 4 levels, and the pages we read carry no prices, so an Avrame quote has to be read level by level.
- Structural Kit. Drawings, engineering stamps, LVL trusses, hardware, framing lumber and stairs.
- Shell Kit. Adds roof, gable wall and subfloor sheathing.
- Exterior Kit. A la carte: roof underlayment, building wrap, metal roofing, soffit, siding, skylights.
- Interior Kit. Interior framing, wall paneling, door and window casing.
Insulation is sourced locally by the buyer at every level, and heating and cooling are not part of any kit. Shipping is $3.25 per mile, which Avrame estimates at $2,200 to $7,800 per delivery. A Structural Kit and a Conestoga kit are both called a cabin kit. Only 1 of them has a roof on it.
What the table says
Price per square foot only compares kits that put the same things in the box. The Mountain King is $93 per square foot with roofing and insulation included. The DEN kits are $155 and $183 for a shell whose kit page lists neither. Line the inclusions up before you line the prices up.
The fast kits are the ones a contractor assembles. DEN's 5 to 15 days is quick because a paid crew does it. Ask for that crew's quote on the same day you ask for the kit price.
A small kit costs more per foot than a large one. System 00 is $58,065 for roughly 100 square feet at ground level. What that buys is a cabin that goes up without machinery on land a truck can barely reach.
Lead time is a carrying cost. Backcountry Hut fabricates in 3 to 4 months and recommends starting 9 to 12 months before assembly. Conestoga quotes delivery at 4 to 6 months. You pay for the land the whole time.
Before you order
3 checks before a deposit, in order.
- Price the ground. Run the lot through the site-prep cost estimator. Foundation, trenching, septic and delivery access are not in any kit price above.
- Confirm the loan. Start with the lender locator. A kit you assemble yourself is financed differently from a finished home.
- Read the zoning. Use the zoning rules guide before you buy. A unit the county calls a shed cannot list as a dwelling.
